I am a self-proclaimed sewaholic. I sew every day. I feel accomplished in my room creating, troubleshooting, or just doing the mundane tasks of hemming.
I didn’t always have free time. Right now we are at the stage in our kids life when they don’t want to hang out with us. So, instead of getting my mama-feelings hurt, I gladly go to my sewing room when I am getting the go-to-you-know-where-look.
When my kids were little and loved me, I had very little time during the day to do anything for myself.
However, because it was such a joy in my life, I knew I needed to make it a routine priority.
This may be an unpopular suggestion, but it was a game-changer in my sewing journey. I wake up an hour before everyone else. I function best in the morning but waking up early has been a practice that took time getting used to. For most of us, sleep is a coveted activity, but there is much to say about the early morning hours when there is not a soul awake. Take it in small steps. Try setting your alarm 10 minutes earlier than usual then work your way to an hour. Trust me, it is worth it!
Since there are many steps to a sewing project, you can make some serious headway during a 20-minute window of allotted sewing time. Below are steps that take about 20 minutes of your time:
Pressing your seams trimming loose threads
Mark pattern pieces Add interfacing to pattern pieces
Sew a couple of seams add gathering stitches
sew a button create bias tape
Adding a zipper sleeve prep
Of course, there are several more quick steps but this gives you an idea of how effective 20 minutes of your time can get you closer to completing your sewing project.
If you don’t have the luxury of having space you can keep your sewing project out in the open, You can always find drawer space to fold your project and tuck it away. I recommend getting a folding sewing table
Although sewing is a hobby for most, just as any fulfilling, healthy activity, if you enjoy it, prioritize it. It is important to find something outside of your “have to’s” to help feed your soul.
HAPPY SEWING!
